As the Army Corps of Engineers dredging continues to improve the river capacity, this will lead to at least 350 jobs at the Merrill Stevens ship repair facility. As they plan to build a $55 million facility to repair 250' mega yachts once dredging is completed. Jones Boatyard at the west end of the river plan a 24-hr Megayacht complex where they expect to lure restaurants, shopping centers and housing. The Port of Miami is the #1 containerized seaport in Florida and is 8th in the nation. The Port's cargo traffic has grown steadily from 2.3 million tons in 1985 to 5.9 million tons for 1995. That was a 5% increase over 1994. Miami is the 7th busiest cargo port in the country. The Miami River's growth has been restricted by its shallow depth. Once dredging is completed over a 3 year term and if trade opens up with Cuba, the traffic along the river is expected to double or triple.
